Install S-and-drive before concealment

Before you start

• Confirm the final ceiling type, access-panel locations, damper/access-door locations, and inspection requirements.
• Verify all joint hardware, supports, sealants, labels, and required testing can be completed before concealment.
• Plan lighting, camera, mirror, or second-lift access to inspect every side of the joint.

Lay it out

1. Place the joint away from walls, framing, and obstructions when the piece breakdown can still be changed.
2. Keep the joint and any nearby damper or access door within a reachable service zone.
3. Mark the exact joint location on coordination or closeout photos.

Set and support it

1. Install permanent hangers before closing the joint.
2. Hold both sections so no later ceiling support is needed to carry the duct.
3. Maintain enough clearance around the joint for sealing and inspection.

Make the connection

1. 1

   Complete the full S-and-drive connection.

   Finish both drive ends and remove sharp projections.

3. 3

   Seal the required joint areas.

   Inspect all four sides and photograph the completed joint.

   Verify nearby access doors, dampers, controls, and labels remain reachable.

   Release the area for ceiling closure only after the zone inspection is complete.
