Above hard ceiling
Task typeHigh-access joint
Tools / equipmentLift, lights, camera, S-lock, drives
Before you start
- Confirm the final ceiling type, access-panel locations, damper/access-door locations, and inspection requirements.
- Verify all joint hardware, supports, sealants, labels, and required testing can be completed before concealment.
- Plan lighting, camera, mirror, or second-lift access to inspect every side of the joint.
Lay it out
- Place the joint away from walls, framing, and obstructions when the piece breakdown can still be changed.
- Keep the joint and any nearby damper or access door within a reachable service zone.
- Mark the exact joint location on coordination or closeout photos.
Set and support it
- Install permanent hangers before closing the joint.
- Hold both sections so no later ceiling support is needed to carry the duct.
- Maintain enough clearance around the joint for sealing and inspection.
Make the connection
- 1
Complete the full S-and-drive connection.
- 2
Finish both drive ends and remove sharp projections.
- 3
Seal the required joint areas.
- 4
Inspect all four sides and photograph the completed joint.
- 5
Verify nearby access doors, dampers, controls, and labels remain reachable.
- 6
Release the area for ceiling closure only after the zone inspection is complete.
Check the install
- The joint is mechanically complete, sealed, and permanently supported.
- No drive, cleat, or corner is hidden from required inspection.
- Access and service items remain reachable after the ceiling is installed.
- Photos clearly show location and completed condition.
Common mistakes
- Assuming the hidden side is complete because the visible side looks good.
- Allowing ceiling installers to close before duct inspection.
- Leaving a loose drive above a hard lid with no access.
- Failing to document concealed work.
Stop and ask
Stop ceiling closure if any side of the joint, support, damper, access door, or required seal cannot be verified.
