Before you start
- Review the architectural finish requirement, seam orientation, joint rhythm, hanger layout, and approved touch-up method.
- Inspect every section for scratches, dents, labels, and mismatched finish before lifting.
- Use clean gloves, padded handling equipment, and protected staging.
Lay it out
- Laser the visible bottom plane and centerline.
- Lay out transverse joints and hangers in a consistent rhythm where possible.
- Orient drives, seams, and fitting faces consistently throughout the visible run.
Set and support it
- Install and level visible supports before raising duct.
- Use soft slings and padded lift points.
- Hold the section without clamping or denting the finished face.
Make the connection
- 1
Fit clean S-cleats without scraping the visible surface.
- 2
Align the bottom and side sightlines before driving.
- 3
Start and seat drives neatly with consistent orientation.
- 4
Trim and finish drive ends uniformly.
- 5
Apply only the required amount of approved sealant and clean smears immediately.
- 6
Remove labels and fingerprints using approved cleaner.
Check the install
- The run is straight from normal viewing angles.
- Joint and hanger spacing appears intentional and consistent.
- No visible dents, scratches, crooked drives, or sealant smears remain.
- Finish direction and color match adjacent pieces.
Common mistakes
- Treating exposed duct like concealed work.
- Leaving factory labels and marker notes visible.
- Using dirty gloves or carbon-steel tools on finish material.
- Correcting alignment after the finish has already been damaged.
Stop and ask
Stop if the finish, grain, paint, or joint orientation does not match the approved appearance, or if damage cannot be repaired invisibly.
