S-and-Drive Square Duct · Temporary assembly
Dry-fit S-and-drive before final install
Mock-up/layout section
Task typeTemporary assembly
Tools / equipmentS-lock, short temporary drives, marker
Before you start
- Define exactly what the mock-up is checking: route, dimensions, fitting orientation, joint access, appearance, or coordination.
- Use temporary hardware only where it will not damage the final locks.
- Do not apply final sealant until the layout is approved.
Lay it out
- Mark control lines, elevations, and reference dimensions.
- Label each temporary piece and fitting orientation.
- Check all nearby trades, access zones, insulation allowance, and support locations.
Set and support it
- Use safe temporary supports that hold the assembly at true final elevation.
- Do not balance a mock-up on ladders, ceiling grid, or other trades.
- Keep the assembly stable enough for accurate measurements.
Make the connection
- 1
Fit S-cleats and start short temporary drives only far enough to hold the pieces.
- 2
Set the mock-up on the planned route.
- 3
Verify clearances, centerlines, fitting takeoffs, access, and final endpoint.
- 4
Record required changes with dimensions and photographs.
- 5
Disassemble carefully without tearing reusable locks.
- 6
Complete final fabrication and reinstall with full drives, sealant, and permanent supports after approval.
Check the install
- The mock-up is at true elevation and orientation.
- Measurements are taken from fixed building references.
- Changes are documented clearly enough for fabrication.
- Temporary assembly is not mistaken for completed work.
Common mistakes
- Using a loose mock-up that sags and gives false dimensions.
- Sealing or fully driving the joint before approval.
- Measuring from unfinished walls or moving objects.
- Leaving temporary hardware in the final installation.
Stop and ask
Stop final fabrication or installation if the route, dimensions, access, or coordination remains unapproved.
