S-and-Drive Square Duct · Corner repair
Correct a loose corner after assembly
Loose drive corner
Task typeCorner repair
Tools / equipmentHammer, seamer, replacement drive
Before you start
- Determine whether the corner is only loose or whether the lock edge, S-cleat, or duct panel is torn.
- Support both sides of the joint before removing hardware.
- Remove old loose sealant only as needed to expose the mechanical problem.
Lay it out
- Identify which plane moved: side wall, top/bottom hem, or the entire section.
- Check the adjacent hanger elevation and joint alignment so the repair does not fight an unsupported run.
Set and support it
- Unload the joint using the existing hangers, lift, or temporary support.
- Clamp the corner square without denting the panel.
- Hold the corrected position until the replacement drive is fully seated.
Make the connection
- 1
Back out or remove the loose drive carefully.
- 2
Inspect and straighten minor lock deformation with a hand seamer.
- 3
Replace damaged cleat or drive with the correct approved piece.
- 4
Re-engage the corner and seat the drive fully.
- 5
Secure the drive end and restore the required seal.
- 6
Release support slowly and recheck the corner.
Check the install
- The repaired corner stays closed after the temporary support is removed.
- No torn hem, split corner, or open mechanical gap remains.
- The duct remains square and aligned with the run.
- Sealant is restored only after the mechanical repair.
Common mistakes
- Adding more sealant without tightening the corner.
- Hammering a loose drive deeper when the lock is torn.
- Repairing the corner while the joint is carrying the duct weight.
- Reusing a bent or undersized drive.
Stop and ask
Stop if the lock edge is split, the panel is cracked, the joint has pulled apart, or the section requires shop refabrication.
