Before you start

  • Confirm register size, wall opening, boot depth, finish thickness, backing, blade pattern, and wall rating.
  • Verify solid backing is available for the face screws.
  • Inspect boot, collar, damper, and register face.
  • Coordinate final finish plane before setting the boot.

Tools and materials

Wall supply register, boot or sleeve, framing or backing, branch duct, fasteners, sealant, level, square, and hand tools.

Lay it out

  1. Mark the finished opening and register centerline.
  2. Set the boot flush to the final wall plane.
  3. Align the branch collar with the route.

Set and support it

  1. Secure the boot to framing or approved backing.
  2. Support the branch independently.
  3. Keep the boot square during wall finishing.

Make the connection

  1. 1

Set and secure the boot at final depth.

  2. 2

    Connect and seal the branch.

  3. 3

Protect the opening during finish work.

  4. 4

Place the register square over the opening.

  5. 5

    Fasten into solid backing.

  6. 6

Operate the damper and orient the blades.

Check the install

  • Face is level and flat.
  • Fasteners engage backing.
  • Damper operates freely.
  • Branch and boot are sealed.
  • Wall finish is not distorted.

Common mistakes

  • Setting the boot before finish thickness is known.
  • Fastening into drywall only.
  • Letting the branch twist the boot.
  • Ignoring a rated-wall condition.

Stop and ask

Stop if backing is missing, the wall is rated without an approved detail, or the boot depth does not match the finished wall.
