- Verify the return path and any fire/smoke restrictions.
- Inspect grille, core, boot, and filter frame where used.
- Coordinate removal and service access.
Tools and materials
Lay-in return grille, return boot where ducted, support hardware, filter frame if specified, fasteners, sealant, level, and hand tools.
Lay it out
- Locate the grille from the ceiling plan.
- Confirm the return path above the ceiling.
- Plan filter removal if the grille is filtered.
Set and support it
- Support the boot independently where ducted.
- Keep the grid from carrying duct weight.
- Keep service access clear.
Make the connection

Set and support the return boot if required.

Connect and seal the return duct.

Place the grille in the grid.

Secure it per the approved detail.

Install the filter if specified.

Verify the core or face removes cleanly.
Check the install
- Grille is square and removable.
- Return path is open.
- Boot is independently supported.
- Filter access remains usable.
- No ceiling-grid load is present.
Common mistakes
- Assuming an open plenum return without verification.
- Blocking filter removal.
- Loading the grid with the boot.
- Installing a grille that cannot be removed.
