Before you start

  • Confirm whether the return is ducted or open plenum, grille size, grid module, filter requirement, and plenum classification.
  • Verify the return path and any fire/smoke restrictions.
  • Inspect grille, core, boot, and filter frame where used.
  • Coordinate removal and service access.

Tools and materials

Lay-in return grille, return boot where ducted, support hardware, filter frame if specified, fasteners, sealant, level, and hand tools.

Lay it out

  1. Locate the grille from the ceiling plan.
  2. Confirm the return path above the ceiling.
  3. Plan filter removal if the grille is filtered.

Set and support it

  1. Support the boot independently where ducted.
  2. Keep the grid from carrying duct weight.
  3. Keep service access clear.

Make the connection

  1. 1

Set and support the return boot if required.

  2. 2

Check the install

  • Grille is square and removable.
  • Return path is open.
  • Boot is independently supported.
  • Filter access remains usable.
  • No ceiling-grid load is present.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming an open plenum return without verification.
  • Blocking filter removal.
  • Loading the grid with the boot.
  • Installing a grille that cannot be removed.

Stop and ask

Stop if the return path, fire/smoke plenum condition, filter access, or support detail is unresolved.
