Before you start

  • Confirm floor-system manufacturer approval, tile type, register size, boot, reinforcement, load rating, and finished elevation.
  • Verify the tile cut will not weaken the raised-floor panel.
  • Inspect the register frame, core, boot, and gasket.
  • Coordinate underfloor services before cutting.

Tools and materials

Raised-floor register, approved boot or plenum connection, tile reinforcement kit where required, cutting template, sealant, fasteners, level, and debris protection.

Lay it out

  1. Locate the opening in the correct tile.
  2. Check underfloor conflicts.
  3. Mark reinforcement and cut lines from the approved template.

Set and support it

  1. Support the boot from structure or the approved floor system.
  2. Reinforce the tile as required.
  3. Keep the register frame flush.

Make the connection

  1. 1

Remove and verify the floor tile.

  2. 2

    Cut and reinforce the opening.

  3. 3

    Install and support the boot.

  4. 4

    Seal the boot connection.

  5. 5

    Set the register flush.

  6. 6

    Protect it from construction debris.

  7. 7

Reinstall the tile and verify stability.

Check the install

  • Register is flush.
  • Tile remains structurally sound.
  • Boot is sealed and supported.
  • No rocking or trip edge remains.
  • Core removes as designed.

Common mistakes

  • Cutting the tile without approval.
  • Leaving the boot unsupported.
  • Creating a raised trip edge.
  • Allowing debris into the underfloor system.

Stop and ask

Stop if floor-system approval, reinforcement, load rating, or underfloor clearance is missing.
