Before you start
- Confirm grille size, return boot or plenum condition, core orientation, filter or damper clearance, and removable-face requirement.
- Inspect the eggcrate core and frame for bent cells or loose retainers.
- Verify the grille will not interfere with a filter rack or damper.
- Coordinate consistent core orientation across the room.
Tools and materials
Eggcrate return grille, boot where ducted, support hardware, fasteners, sealant, level, and hand tools.
Lay it out
- Set the grille square to the ceiling or wall.
- Align core orientation with adjacent grilles.
- Confirm removal clearance.
Set and support it
- Support the boot where required.
- Keep the frame square.
- Do not use the grille face to carry duct weight.
Make the connection

Install and support the boot if ducted.

Seal the return connection.

Set the grille frame square.

Install the removable eggcrate core.

Secure retainers.

Check for rattle and interference.
Check the install
- Core seats fully.
- No rattle remains.
- Face aligns with adjacent work.
- Return path is clear.
- Core removes without obstruction.
Common mistakes
- Installing the core backward or with inconsistent orientation.
- Blocking a filter or damper.
- Letting the boot rest on the grille.
- Bending cells during installation.
Stop and ask
Stop if the eggcrate interferes with a filter, damper, access point, or cannot be removed after installation.
