Before you start

  • Confirm register size, boot, front- and rear-blade orientation, damper, throw pattern, and room layout.
  • Inspect both blade banks, linkage, frame, and damper.
  • Verify the desired throw does not conflict with occupants, glazing, or obstructions.
  • Coordinate access to the damper.

Tools and materials

Double-deflection register, matching boot, branch duct, fasteners, sealant, level, and hand tools.

Lay it out

  1. Locate the register and intended throw.
  2. Set front and rear blade banks for the approved pattern.
  3. Keep the damper accessible.

Set and support it

  1. Support the boot independently.
  2. Keep the frame square.
  3. Support the branch so it does not twist the boot.

Make the connection

  1. 1

    Install and support the boot.

  2. 2

    Connect and seal the branch.

  3. 3

    Mount the register square.

  4. 4

Set the rear blades for primary direction.

  5. 5

Set the front blades for spread.

  6. 6

    Operate the damper.

  7. 7

    Verify the final throw.

Check the install

  • Both blade banks move freely.
  • Face is level.
  • Throw direction matches the room.
  • Damper remains accessible.
  • Boot carries no ceiling or wall load.

Common mistakes

  • Setting both blade banks the same way.
  • Aiming air at a wall or occupant.
  • Burying the damper.
  • Letting the branch twist the face.

Stop and ask

Stop if the airflow pattern conflicts with the room layout, the blade banks bind, or the boot cannot be supported independently.
