Before you start

  • Confirm whether the door or partition is fire-rated, transfer-grille listing, sleeve depth, security needs, and door balance.
  • Inspect both grille halves, sleeve, fasteners, and edges.
  • Verify the opening does not conflict with door hardware.
  • Do not cut a rated door without the exact listed assembly.

Tools and materials

Listed or approved transfer-grille assembly, sleeve, opposed grille halves, tamper-resistant hardware where required, template, cutting tools, edge protection, and hand tools.

Lay it out

  1. Mark the opening from the approved door elevation.
  2. Check hinges, lockset, closer, and vision-panel clearance.
  3. Align both grille faces.

Set and support it

  1. Support the door during cutting.
  2. Install the sleeve so it does not distort the door.
  3. Keep the assembly centered.

Make the connection

  1. 1

Verify the door and grille rating.

  2. 2

Cut the opening to the approved template.

  3. 3

    Deburr and protect edges.

  4. 4

    Install the sleeve.

  5. 5

    Set both grille halves.

  6. 6

    Fasten evenly.

  7. 7

    Operate and balance the door.

Check the install

  • Both faces align.
  • No sharp edge remains.
  • Door operates and latches normally.
  • Hardware is complete.
  • The listed assembly remains intact where required.

Common mistakes

  • Cutting a rated door for a nonlisted grille.
  • Interfering with the closer or lockset.
  • Leaving sharp metal edges.
  • Adding too much weight and affecting door operation.

Stop and ask

Stop if the door is fire-rated and the grille assembly is not listed, or if the opening conflicts with door hardware or operation.
