Exposed stainless duct
High-end architectural/process
Before you start
- Confirm stainless grade, grain or finish direction, sample-approved weld polish, visible joint system, fastener appearance, support material, and dissimilar-metal isolation.
- Use dedicated stainless tools and clean gloves.
- Inspect protective film, finish, weld edges, and surfaces for contamination or scratches.
- Decide when protective film will be removed so it does not burn into welds or come off too early.
Tools and materials
Exposed stainless duct, dedicated stainless tools and abrasives, approved welded, polished-flange, or gasketed joint materials, stainless architectural supports, clean gloves, soft slings, finish-protection film, approved cleaner, isolation materials, laser, and level.
Lay it out
- Laser the visible run and coordinate seam, joint, grain, support, and hardware orientation.
- Mark finish direction and the least-visible joint side.
- Plan polishing and cleaning access before sections are installed.
Set and support it
- Install stainless or approved isolated architectural supports.
- Use padded lifting equipment.
- Support both sections so fit-up does not pull or scratch the visible surfaces.
Make the connection
- 1
Clean and prepare the mating surfaces with dedicated stainless tools.
- 2
Align the grain, visible face, and joint before tack-up or assembly.
- 3
Complete the specified welded, polished-flange, or gasketed connection.
- 4
Polish or finish the joint to the approved sample.
- 5
Install concealed or neatly aligned hardware.
- 6
Remove protective film at the controlled stage.
- 7
Clean with the approved stainless product and inspect under finished lighting.
Check the install
- Grain and finish direction remain consistent.
- No carbon contamination, rust staining, scratch, or fingerprint remains.
- Weld polish or joint finish matches the approved sample.
- Supports and hardware look intentional and compatible.
- The visible run stays straight and clean.
Common mistakes
- Using carbon-steel tools on the finish.
- Polishing one joint differently from the rest.
- Removing protective film before nearby construction is complete.
- Allowing support hardware to create dissimilar-metal contact.
Stop and ask
Stop if the finish sample, weld-polish requirement, stainless grade, support isolation, or visible hardware standard is missing or unresolved.
