Round long-radius elbow

Low-loss turn

ConnectionGasket/slip/flange
SupportDedicated elbow support

Before you start

  • Confirm the long-radius elbow size, radius, joint type, airflow direction, and dedicated support.
  • Field-check the full swing of the heel against structure and access zones.
  • Inspect the elbow body, tangents, ends, gasket, and seams for damage.
  • Verify the fitting can be installed without flattening or shortening the radius.

Tools and materials

Round long-radius elbow, approved gasketed, slip, or flanged joint components, fasteners, sealant, soft slings, dedicated fitting support, level, laser, and hand tools.

Lay it out

  1. Mark inlet and outlet tangents and the elbow plane.
  2. Confirm the long radius clears all structure.
  3. Locate support near the fitting center of gravity.

Set and support it

  1. Support the elbow body independently.
  2. Use soft slings and more than one control point where needed.
  3. Keep both straight runs supported.

Make the connection

  1. 1

Set the elbow on its support and align the inlet tangent.

  2. 2

    Complete the first joint fully.

  3. 3

Recheck fitting rotation and downstream centerline.

  4. 4

Bring the downstream run to the outlet tangent.

  5. 5

    Complete the second joint.

  6. 6

    Install approved fasteners and seal.

  7. 7

Load supports and verify the fitting does not roll.

Check the install

  • Both tangents align smoothly with the straight runs.
  • The elbow retains its full round profile and radius.
  • Both joints are fully inserted or seated.
  • The fitting does not roll.
  • The support carries the elbow body.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to squeeze the elbow past structure.
  • Rolling the fitting to reach the downstream run.
  • Supporting only one end.
  • Treating a long-radius elbow like a flexible offset.

Stop and ask

Stop if the radius conflicts with structure and cannot be installed without deformation, or if the fitting size or radius differs from the approved design.
