Before you start
- Confirm diffuser size, grid module, neck size, 4-way pattern, boot, branch route, and independent support.
- Inspect face, pattern controllers, neck, and boot.
- Verify ceiling grid carries no duct weight.
- Coordinate finished ceiling elevation.
Tools and materials
Lay-in 4-way diffuser, matching boot, branch duct, sealant, fasteners, independent hanger wires or brackets, level, and hand tools.
Lay it out
- Locate diffuser in the grid.
- Confirm 4-way throw is appropriate.
- Align neck and branch route.
Set and support it
- Support diffuser or boot from structure.
- Support branch independently.
- Keep grid unloaded.
Make the connection

Set and support the boot or diffuser.

Connect and seal the branch.
- 3
Place the face in the grid.
- 4
Secure as required.
- 5
Center and level the face.
- 6
Verify pattern controllers.
Check the install
- Face is level.
- Support is independent.
- Neck is sealed.
- Pattern is unobstructed.
- Grid carries no duct weight.
Common mistakes
- Resting the boot on the grid.
- Installing a 4-way pattern beside a wall without approval.
- Leaving the neck unsealed.
- Using the branch as support.
Stop and ask
Stop if the ceiling grid is carrying duct weight, the neck or boot mismatches, or the 4-way pattern conflicts with the room.
