Before you start
- Confirm the exact round fire-damper model, sleeve or collar assembly, wall or floor rating, retaining method, breakaway connection, and access requirement.
- Inspect the round frame, blades, sleeve, label, link, and factory components for damage.
- Verify the opening size and annular space match the listed assembly.
- Do not flatten, notch, shorten, or field-modify the round damper or sleeve.
Tools and materials
Listed round fire damper, sleeve or collar components, exact retaining hardware, listed breakaway connection, access-door materials, tape, level, manufacturer instructions, and approved fasteners.
Lay it out
- Mark the damper centerline through the rated opening.
- Orient the access side and operating components where they can be reached.
- Coordinate independent duct supports before installation.
Set and support it
- Support both round duct runs independently.
- Hold the damper assembly centered without deforming the round frame.
- Maintain listed clearances around the sleeve.

Check the install
- The damper remains round and centered.
- The retaining and breakaway details match the listing.
- The blades move freely.
- Access and labels remain visible.
- The duct carries no load through the sleeve.
Common mistakes
- Field-cutting the sleeve to make the opening fit.
- Overtightening the round connection and distorting the frame.
- Using an ordinary slip joint instead of the listed breakaway.
- Leaving no usable access.
Stop and ask
Stop for any proposed field alteration of the damper or sleeve, a mismatched opening, or an installation detail not covered by the listing.
