Duct through non-rated wall
Ordinary partition
ConnectionContinuous duct/sleeve
SupportSupports both sides
Before you start
- Confirm the partition is non-rated and not a smoke barrier before using an ordinary penetration detail.
- Verify opening size, sleeve or trim requirements, acoustical seal, and finish.
- Inspect the opening for sharp edges and wall framing.
- Plan supports on both sides.
Tools and materials
Continuous duct or approved sleeve, supports on both sides, edge protection, trim or escutcheon, approved non-rated sealant, level, tape, and finish-protection materials.
Lay it out
- Mark the duct centerline on both wall faces.
- Coordinate finished opening and trim.
- Keep duct joints outside the wall where practical.
Set and support it
- Support the duct independently on both sides.
- Protect the duct from sharp framing edges.
- Do not let the wall carry duct weight.
Make the connection
- 1
Verify the partition classification.
- 2
Install sleeve or edge protection where required.
- 3
Pass the duct through without scraping or crushing it.
- 4
Center and support the duct.
- 5
Install trim or escutcheon.
- 6
Seal the annular space using the approved non-rated detail.
- 7
Clean and inspect both wall faces.
Check the install
- The duct is centered and independently supported.
- The wall carries no load.
- The seal and trim are neat.
- No sharp edge contacts the duct.
- The penetration remains serviceable.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a wall is non-rated without checking.
- Letting the wall support the duct.
- Leaving a joint hidden in the wall.
- Using firestop products without a tested detail.
Stop and ask
Stop if the partition is later identified as rated or smoke-resistive, or if its classification cannot be confirmed.
